How to change a widget after your email is sent
Last updated
You can change a widget after your email has gone out. Your email doesn't contain a copy of the widget, only a link to it, so when you save a change in the dashboard, every email using that widget shows the new version the next time it's opened. No correction email needed.
How to change it
- Open the widget in the dashboard.
- Make your change and click Save.
- Open your test email again to check. The change usually shows within a minute or two.
What you can safely change
- Countdown timers: the end date and time, time zone, design, labels, what shows when the timer ends, and links.
- Polls: colors, text, images and the thank-you page.
- Personalized and rule-based images: text, styling, images and rules.
- Weather widgets: location, dates and design.
- Critical alerts: the design, and whether the alert is on or off. That's what they're for. See how to turn a critical alert on or off.
- Social proof counters: the design, and where the Dynamic Link sends people.
What to avoid
- Changing a poll's preset or deleting poll options. Votes on removed options aren't accepted, so those buttons in sent emails stop working.
- Switching a text layer or rule to a different merge-tag variable. Sent emails only pass the variables that were in the code when you copied it, so a new variable has no value in those emails.
- Archiving a widget that's still in use. Archived widgets stop showing in every email, including ones already sent. See what happens if I archive a widget.
Why some people may still see the old version
- Apple Mail can keep showing the version from when the email was first opened. See my countdown timer is not showing correctly on Apple Mail.
- Your email platform's preview may show an older version until the email is sent. See widgets seem outdated in my email template preview.
